Rare 'pink' super moon will appear over Scotland's skies tonight

A stunning rare 'pink' super moon will take over the skies on Wednesday for locked down Scots.

Marking the start of Spring, it will debut as the largest and brightest traditional pink moon of 2020.

Reaching its closest point to earth during the early hours it will appear 30% brighter and 14% bigger than at its furthest, reports The Mirror.

“It’s going to be spectacular.” said Emily Drabek-Maunder, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Named after a wildflower which blooms in North America this time of year, the super moon comes after the spring equinox.

Ms Drabek-Maunder said: “The supermoon is a great opportunity for everyone to appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

"While the night sky seems constant to us, we can witness the changing universe by taking notice of the moon.”

At its closest point, the moon is just over 220,000 miles from Earth, almost 30,000 miles closer than at its furthest point.
