UTTARADIT: A rare mountain goat was struck and killed by a pick-up truck on the Uttaradit-Denchai road in Muang district of this lower northern province on Saturday night.

Pol Capt Chamras Paracham, an investigator of Muang district police, said the incident occurred at about 8.30pm near Dan Nakham village.

After being informed of the incident, police found Kingkan Khonrak, 38, of Phetchabun province waiting with her vehicle on the roadside. She said she was driving from Uttaradit town to Denchai district of Phrae province when an animal suddenly ran across the road in front of her pickup. The collision killed the animal and damaged her pickup.

Police called National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department officials from nearby Khao Pha Tang game reserve to take the carcass for examination.

Officials determined the dark-brown mountain goat was a Sumatran serow of the capricornus sumatraensis species thought to be near extinction, and weighed about 50 kilogrammes.
