Rare monkey stolen from US zoo found safe and sound

A 12-year-old rare Goeldi monkey stolen from a US zoo has been found safe and sound.

The monkey named Kali was reported stolen from Palm Beach Zoo on Monday, with keepers warning that she was in danger.

Detectives brought Kali back to the zoo just before midnight and she appears to be in a good condition, zoo president and CEO Margo McKnight said.

West Palm Beach Police tweeted “Kali is home!” and told followers that they will provide more details soon.

The Goeldi monkey weighs around 500g and requires a specialised diet as well as anti-inflammatory medicine.

A zookeeper discovered the monkey missing early Monday. Surveillance video showed a person walking on the zoo's perimeter about that same time.

Officials said there were signs of forced entry in Kail's habitat.

On Monday zoo spokesperson Naki Carter told reporters: “We have some very strong leads into how someone did gain access to the zoo after hours overnight and obtained access to that habitat to take her.”

Zoo officials are "grateful for the tenacious and passionate detectives and police officers" who searched for Kali, McKnight said.

The Goeldi monkey is said to be popular on the illicit pet trade.
