Rare footage shows life at former Nottingham 'asylum' during the 1930s

Archive footage dating back to the 1930s provides a fascinating snapshot into life at an old Nottingham mental health hospital.

Described as a series of "old silent Cine Films", the footage of the old Mapperley Hospital has now been shared online.

It provides a nostalgic look inside and activities taking place on its grounds.

The hospital opened in 1880, the year when city patients were moved there from Sneinton Asylum, a mental health hospital that came under the Asylum Act of 1808.

Initially for 60 patients in 1810, the facility in Sneinton served the wider county and was the first of its kind in the UK when it opened.

But it was too small from the off and patients were relocated - and by 1900 there were 77 public asylums in England.

Mapperley Hospital, in Porchester Road, eventually closed in 1994, the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust headquartered at part of the old hospital site, at Duncan Macmillan House.
