Rare fire tornado spirals 260ft in sky as out-of-control blaze rips through farm

A rare 'fire tornado' has been caught on camera spiralling more than 260 feet up in the sky as it rips through a farm in Brazil.

The whirlwind of flames flashes bright orange amid thick black smoke while workers desperately try to clear the land.

Locals said there were explosions inside the fire tornado as wind passed through the fiery whirlpool.

The bizarre phenomenon was captured on Tuesday on a farm on the banks of the GO-210 highway in Santa Helena de Goias.

According to La Republica, the fire was brought under control by local officials.

But a second fire tornado emerged again two days later in a cane plantation site near the GO-235 road.

Thick plumes of smoke covered the fire swirl as it moved across the sugarcane farm at a slow speed.

Firefighters said fire tornadoes are very dangerous and can reach up to 80 metres (260ft) high, local media Aporrea reports.

Meteorological experts at Sao Paulo’s Somar Meteorology Institute claimed the formation is one of the rarest natural occurrences.

The phenomenon only happened in a condition where it's combined with high temperatures, turbulent winds, low air humidity and dry soil.

The fire tornado is made up of a core of fire and an air ring around the flames that feed them with fresh oxygen.
