Rare 'faceless' £10 note withdrawn from cash machine could net pensioner a fortune

A lucky pensioner could be set to turn a tenner into thousands of pounds - after withdrawing a rare faceless note.

Peter Coleman, 72, was surprised when he took the £10 from an ATM and spotted that the Queen was missing.

The grandfather-of-three then tried to use the note in a shop, where a worker said she could not accept it as it was not legitimate.

But when she scanned the money she conceded that it was 'real' - giving Peter, from Littleborough, Greater Manchester, a bright idea.

He is now planning to auction off the £10, which could be worth a handsome sum to the right collector.

Peter told The Sun : "I told her that I would rather keep it because it was so unusual

"I'm definitely up for auctioning the note, if anyone would even want to have it.

"I just thought that it was very unusual and that it could be a sign."

Peter's story comes just days after it emerged Brexit coins are selling for hundreds of pounds online.

There has been a surge of interest in the Royal Mint's special 50p piece - despite experts warning it's not actually that rare.

The "Peace Prosperity And Friendship With All Nations" coin entered circulation in 2020 to mark the UK's exit from the European Union.

Around 4.5million were released when the transition period was triggered - with more than 9million now in people's pockets.

The coins each feature the words "Peace Prosperity And Friendship With All Nations" in italics.

But, a year on, the coins are being listed for well above face value on marketplace eBay.

The sale left even coin experts baffled because of its high mintage number.

Rare coins expert Alexandra Fiddons, of Change Checker, said the coin isn't particularly "rare".

She said: "Whilst the Brexit 50p isn't particularly rare, there's no denying the popularity of this coin's theme.

"The 50p was teased for a long while before the UK's official exit from the European Union.

"And when it was officially released into circulation, people were eager to snap them up for their own collections."

But she added that a high listing price "doesn't always mean the sale will actually go through."
