Rare error on £2 coin means it could now be worth £500

A rare error on the 2014 First World War Centenary £2 coin could be worth £500 - just because the words “two pounds” are missing from the coin's design.

The coin features Lord Kitchener and this design was released in 2014 to mark the 100 years since the beginning of the First World War.

Lord Kitchener was well-known for being a part of the British Government Propaganda campaigns during the First World War.

In which, the famous “your country needs you” slogan is on the 2014 coin's design.

So far only two of these coins have been identified with this rare error.

The first being discovered at auction in March sold for £500, the other was discovered and shared by Coin Hunter.

The Coin Hunter Facebook Page says “Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener - if the heads side does not show “TWO POUNDS” - you have an error that appears to be very rare.

It also reads that “5,720,000 coins were struck for circulation - during part of the production run the incorrect heads die was used”

This suggests that there are 5,720,000 of the correct coins and error was likely to occur when production switched from 2014 Trinity House to this coin, producing a rare number of coins with no denomination.

Check your coins and if you think you have a rare coin, the Royal Mint can check to see if it's real.
