Rare covid symptom to look out for in kids as cases rise again

An unusual covid symptom has been highlighted among children as cases have seen another rise in recent weeks.

Currently, around one in 40 people in the UK has coronavirus, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Blistered feet, known as "covid toes", are being highlighted by a doctor as a rare symptom associated with coronavirus. The Royal College of Podiatry has, too, issued advice over the painful problem.

Covid toes affects the skin, causing discolouration and swelling on the toes. It is more often found among children and young people, according to the College.

The podiatry body described the phenomena as "chilblain like lesions". It said: "Classic chilblains are defined as cold induced, erythematous or violaceous lesions accompanied by itching, oedema, pain or burning, blistering or ulceration. However, Covid-19 led to a wave of perniosis associated without any cold exposure."

Clinical lead at online pharmacy, The Independent Pharmacy, Dr Donald Grant, told the MEN : “Blistered feet are a rare symptom associated with coronavirus. In some cases, the virus can affect your skin causing discolouration and swelling around your toes.

"As covid is still such a new virus the exact reason that this happens is not fully understood by virologists and dermatologists. The symptom, which can also affect your hands, results in blisters and the development of itchy painful bumps.

“Covid toes can appear at any age. That said, the symptom does seem most prevalent in children, teenagers, and young adults. The typical first signs of covid toes are swelling and discolouration, firstly turning red and then purple as the condition progresses.

“If you spot the early signs of covid toes, take a test. Positive tests for those who present these symptoms should be reported to a doctor as research into the phenomenon is ongoing. It seems coronavirus continues to surprise us over two years on.”
