Rare copy of Batman comic attracts £1.1million bid ahead of going to auction

A rare copy of the first comic devoted to Batman has smashed the £1million mark – days before going under the hammer.

The near-mint Batman No1 has been in the hands of the same private collector for 38 years.

It has iconic images of Batman and Robin on the front and back covers.

Inside it tells of “The Legend of the Batman” and how he started out.

Making debuts alongside the Dynamic Duo in the comic were villain the Joker and beautiful burglar The Cat, who later became Catwoman.

The copy, bought for £2226 in 1982, has already had a pre-auction bid of £1.1million.

The comic has been placed with Heritage Auctions, in Dallas, Texas, which holds the current record for the sale of a Batman comic after selling a 1939 copy of Detective Comics 27, marking the superhero’s debut, for £1.1million last November.

Ed Jaster, of Heritage Auctions, said: “I am pleased the Batman No1 has already broken our record for the most expensive comic sold.”

The comic will be sold online on Thursday.
