Some of the rarest and most valuable UK coins have been revealed - and a number of them could be worth a small fortune.

Rare coins can be very valuable, with some selling for up to £650 in recent months.

The coins and notes used in this country have changed considerably in the past twenty or so years.

More than 30 billion coins are estimated to be in circulation in the UK today.

The most valuable coins are usually those that have low mintage numbers - that is only a limited number were made - or those with an error.

A rare 50p coin recently sold for £650 - and there are still many in circulation.

The special 50p was made to mark the UK leaving the European Union in January 2020.

Just after the coin's launch, some were selling online for around £10-20, but with many having now ended up in the hands of collectors, the price of those remaining has jumped.

Here are some of the other rare coins the ECHO has reported on selling for way more than their original value in the past month:

Rare £2 coin sells for £500 and there are more out there

The Lord Kitchener 'we want you' First World War £2 coin dated 2014 (Derby Telegraph)

A rare £2 coin sold for £500 and experts believe there are more in circulation.

The coin features an image of Lord Kitchener, who helped build Britain's first mass army and later became the face of the First World War when he appeared on the famous 'Your Country Needs You' poster.

It was released by the Royal Mint in 2014 to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.

While a normal version of the 2014 First World War Centenary coin is not likely to be worth much more than its face value, some could be worth hundreds of pounds.

The most valuable have the words "Two Pounds" missing on the head side.

One has recently sold on eBay for £500 - some 250 times its original worth.

Experts at Coin Hunter say more than five million of these coins were struck for circulation and it appears to be “very rare” to find one without the words.

It isn’t clear exactly how many of the flawed versions could be in circulation.

Writing on its Facebook page, Coin Hunter said: "Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener. If the heads side does not show 'TWO POUNDS' - you have an error that appears to be very rare."

20p coins sell for £70 and £90

One of the rarest 20p coins in the UK sold for £90 on eBay on January 10.

The undated 20p became the first coin in over 300 years to enter circulation without a date and it’s estimated by The Royal Mint that no more than 250,000 coins made it into circulation.

This mule coin came about when the new Royal Shield 20p coins were struck for circulation in 2008, with no date on the reverse.

But a batch was accidentally issued with no date on either side of the coin.

Another lucky seller received £70 for theirs on January 27.

Kew Gardens 50p sells for £155

The Kew Gardens 50p (Royal Mint/PA Wire)

One of the rarest 50p coins in the UK sold for a huge £155.

The coin features a design of London’s Kew Gardens on the ‘tails’ side, with the Queen’s face as normal on the other.

It is estimated there are 210,000 of them in circulation.

The coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and one lucky seller recently received £155 for theirs.

Due to its rarity in comparison with regular coins, this one and others are considered valuable by collectors - with the Kew Gardens 50p often topping lists of the rarest 50 pence pieces.

Change checking website Coin Hunter puts the average price range for the Kew Gardens 50p being sold between £150.89 and £161.50, meaning that this particular coin has sold for an above average price.

However, there have also been examples of this coin selling for as much as £200 in the past.
