Rare coin could be worth up to €585 because of huge error in its design

A rare version of a coin launched to mark the centenary of the First World War could be worth up to €585.

This particular coin is worth a mint if you happen to find one where specific words are missing on the head side.

The coin in question is the 2014 First World War Centenary £2 - with the words "Two Pounds".

Of course, only the version with an error in its design is worth more than its face value.

A normal version of this coin - like the one above - is likely to still be worth just £2.

The Royal Mint released this particular design seven years ago to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.

It features an image of Lord Kitchener who was a prominent British war figure and also appeared on government propaganda posters.

Experts at Coin Hunter say 5,720,000 of these coins were struck for circulation and it appears to be “very rare” to find one without a date.

However, it isn’t impossible - the first of its kind sold at a Lockdales auction in March 2020 for €585.

Another was also recently posted on the Coin Hunter Facebook page, which means there are at least two that exist.

It isn’t clear exactly how many of the error versions could be in circulation.

Writing on its Facebook page, Coin Hunter experts said: "Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener.

"If the heads side does not show 'TWO POUNDS' - you have an error that appears to be very rare."

If you suspect you may have a rare coin, you can ask the Royal Mint to take a look and check if it is real.

Or if you're thinking of bidding on a coin, you should always be wary of fake coins circulating on eBay.

Websites and Facebook groups from change experts like Coin Hunter can help you work out if a coin is the real deal or not.
