Rare 'Christmas Star' to appear in Ireland's skies for the first time in 800 years

A rare 'Christmas Star' will be visible in Irish skies on the winter solstice this month.

Planets Jupiter and Saturn are set to align as the star will visible on December 21.

Skygazers will have the chance to catch this spectacular celestial event which is happening for the first time in nearly 800 years.

The two planets will be so close that they will look like they have merged in the even which has been called the Christmas Star or the Star of Bethlehem, as well as The Great Conjunction.

Jupiter and Saturn will sit just 0.1 degrees apart, or a mere one-fifth the width of the Moon.

The last sighting of this incredible astronomical phenomenon happened in 1226 AD.

You won't need binoculars or a telescope but if you have the equipment you'll be able to zoom in and "watch the dance of Jupiter's four moons — Europa, Io, Callisto and Ganymede," Astronomy.com reports.
