Rare 50p found on beach sells for £10,000

A rare 50p coin found on a beach has been sold for more than £10,000 within days of being listed on eBay.

The Olympic coin was put into circulation nine years ago ahead of the 2012 games in London.

But the design on the swimmer coin was quickly changed - with wavy lines removed from the front of the swimmer's face.

This means the original - of which there are only 600 in circulation - is much sought after by collectors.

The coin attracted 68 bids on eBay in 10 days and sold for £10,101, reports The Mirror.

"I don't understand much about coins," the seller wrote, "but I believe this coin is genuine. Do not bid if you don't feel confident."

Usually millions of coins are put into circulation when a new design is created - meaning having just 600 is very rare.

Experts at coin specialists ChangeChecker predict that these coins could be worth between £1,000 and £1,500.

If you've got one at home, check to see if the water lines cross over the swimmer's face.

A coin is only worth what someone will pay for it so there's no guarantee that yours will sell for as much.
