Rare 50p coin sells for £410 - signs your change could be worth bidding war

It's time to check your spare change after a rare 50p coin sold for £410 - over 800 times its value.

Rare coins valued by collectors can fetch huge sums of money and the Kew Gardens coin is chief among them. Worth an estimated £140, there are only 210,000 of the pieces in circulation.

With a starting price of £150, the auction led to a 12-way bidding war, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The end result had one eBay seller making a tidy profit - read on for how to spot the coin.

The rare coin was released in 2009 to mark the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens' opening in 1759. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other.

The big profit may be down to the coin still being sealed in its original packaging.

According to its online listing, the "Kew Gardens 50p genuine 2009 from the royal mint SEALED very rare" had a starting price of £150. But after a 12-way bidding war, this soon jumped up to £410, plus the £5.55 delivery fees.

If you're lucky enough to find a Kew Gardens 50p coin under a sofa cushion, the first thing you should do is check its date. The 2019 reissue, which celebrated the 50 years of the 50p, is not as highly valued as the 2009 coins.

You could still be in for an exciting payday if you find the 2019 coin, as they can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
