Rare 50p coin sells for £185 on eBay

A 50p coin which was one of 210,000 released into circulation has sold on eBay for £185.

The coin was released in 2009 across the Uk and there is a good chance you have had one at some point over the last 12 years.

The 50p features an image of Kew Gardens and was released to mark 250 years since Kew opened in 1759.

A total of 32 offers were placed by 11 different bidders, with the eventual sale price jumping up from £9.99, reports The Echo.

The Kew 50p often tops lists of the rarest coins in the country despite the fact more than 200,000 were put into circulation.

As a result, the Coin Hunter puts the average price range for the Kew Gardens 50p at between £150.89 and £161.50.

And there have also been examples of this coin selling for as much as £200 in the past.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change soon, the first thing you should do is check the date on it.

This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and this version doesn’t tend to sell for as much.

But even these newer versions can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
