Rare 50p coin sells for £155 - and there are 210,000 in circulation

A rare 50p coin marking the 250th anniversary of the opening of Kew Gardens has sold for a whopping £155.

Better still, there are thought to be around 210,000 more in circulation across the country, meaning there could be one in your pocket.

The coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since the gardens opened in 1759.

On Friday, a seller received £155 for their coin, with 24 bids placed in the online auction.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the coin has previously been listed by the Royal Mint as the rarest 50p coin in general circulation, while change-checking website Coin Hunter puts the average price range for the Kew Gardens 50p at prices between £150.89 and £161.50.

However, some examples have sold for up to £200.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p you should check the date on it as the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and this version doesn’t sell for as much.

But even the reissues can sell for between £70 and £80.
