20p coin sells for £90 on eBay and there could be one in your pocket

A rare 20 pence coin was recently sold for a staggering £90 on auction site eBay, and there are hundreds of thousands of others out there.

The coin became a collectible after it entered circulation with no date stamped onto it, and the recent sale proves there is a thriving market for them.

According to The Royal Mint, there are approximately 250,000 of the coins in circulation.

As reported by Hull Live, the 20 pence piece was the first coin in over 300 years to not have a date - making it very valuable for collectors.

The seller, who made a substantial profit, wrote in their eBay listing that the item was an "undated 20p coin" and that they would rather the buyer collect it "in person".

Coin experts Change Checker said: "This coin is regarded by many as the Holy Grail of change collecting, and back in 2008, the undated 20p saga encouraged an entire country to start carefully checking their coins."

In August 2021, a similar coin sold for £56, according to the Mirror.

A Royal Mint spokesperson said: “The Royal Mint can confirm a small number of new design 20p coins were incorrectly struck using the obverse from the previous design, as a result these coins bear no date.

“The issue was quickly resolved. The Royal Mint would like to assure the public that these are legal tender.
