Rare £2 coin with minting error could be worth £500 – check if you have one

A rare version of a £2 coin released to mark the centenary of the First World War could be worth 250 times its face value.

A minting error left an unknown number of the 5.7 million commemorative coins in circulation without the words "TWO POUNDS" on the head side.

No errors on the tail side – featuring the then secretary of state for war Lord Kitchener – have been identified.

While normal versions of the 2014 WW1 centenary coin (pictured above) are likely still worth £2, those with errors could fetch significantly more.

The first of its kind sold at a Lockdales auction in March 2020 for £500, reports the Mirror.

Experts at Coin Hunter say it appears to be “very rare” to find one without "TWO POUNDS" minted on it, but they recommend people check their change and keep an eye out for them.

It is not clear exactly how many of the error versions could be in circulation.

Posting on Facebook, Coin Hunter said: "Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener.

"If the heads side does not show 'TWO POUNDS' - you have an error that appears to be very rare."

If you suspect you may have a rare coin, you can ask the Royal Mint to take a look and check if it is real.
