Rare £2 coin sought by collectors sells for £115 on eBay – and you could have one too

A rare £2 coin from 1994 that was only ever meant to be a trial design has sold for £115 on eBay.

The coin was made to be a "practice-like" piece and has been dubbed by experts at Change Checker as "the coin that never was".

But as it is so rare, this makes it extremely valuable to collectors - and it isn’t impossible that one could appear in your spare change.

This particular version of the coin sold for £114.75 on November 8 following a three-day auction - although it only received three bids in total.

The coin was minted in 1994 and is the very first version of the modern bi-metallic style £2 coin.

This means it is the first to have the gold coloured outer ring with the silver-coloured inner section that is so easily recognisable today.

It features an image of the Mayflower ship on one side, with the traditional portrait of The Queen on the obverse.

But this coin was never officially released into circulation and was never technically legal tender.

Instead, they were issued in presentation packs for commemorative reasons, with around 4,500 packs sent out.

Change Checker explains: “Trial pieces are used by the Royal Mint to test the minting process of a new coin, and to help the automatic vending industry re-calibrate their machines in preparation.

“Other than the handful given as samples for testing, this trial £2 coin was only ever issued in a presentation pack (pictured) and was billed as the United Kingdom’s first bi-colour coin.”

Bi-metallic style £2 coins that we know today were first released in 1997 - some three years before this practice piece.
