A rare £2 coin has sold for 424 times its face value on eBay.
The 1996 Football European Championships Gold Proof £2 Coin is a commemorative coin that features a football, the date and 16 small circles to signify the countries taking part in the European Championship football tournament in 1996. Only 2,000 coins were minted making them extremely valuable.
According to the Coin Expert, the gold-proof version of the coin is worth around £1,000 - but higher asking prices have been spotted.

The front side of the coin features the usual portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription around the coin reads ‘Elizabeth. II. Dei. Gratia. Regina. F.D.’, as well as the face value of the coin.
The reverse of the coin is made to look like a football. It features the year 1996 across the centre of the coin. The football is split into pentagonal shapes.
The design also features 16 small rings, representing the countries, around the pentagon. On eBay, there are two 1996 Football European Championships Gold Proof £2 coins.
One, which is an error coin, has an asking price of £5,425. The second is priced at £1,375. On May 17, a coin sold for £849 on eBay.
