Rare £2 coin sells for £500 - and there are more in circulation

A rare coin has sold for the incredible price of £500 and it is believed there are more in circulation.

The £2 coin features an image of British war figure, Lord Kitchener.

It was released by the Royal Mint seven years ago to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War, reports Liverpool Echo.

While a normal version of the 2014 First World War Centenary £2 would not be worth more than its face value, some could be worth hundreds.

The £2 is worth more if you happen to find one where the words "Two Pounds" are missing on the head side.

Experts at Coin Hunter say 5,720,000 of these coins were struck for circulation and it appears to be “very rare” to find one without a date.

However, it isn’t impossible - the first of its kind sold at a Lockdales auction in March 2020 for £500, reports the Mirror.

It isn’t clear exactly how many of the error versions could be in circulation.

If you suspect you may have a rare coin, you can ask the Royal Mint to take a look and check if it is real.
