Rapoport: Very clear that Williams situation is ‘not going well’

Reports are now out that the Washington Redskins plan to sign veteran Donald Penn to a 1-year contract on Wednesday, which, on the surface, gives them a starting left tackle in the locker room.

Look past the base layer, though, and the signing alludes to much more; Washington is covering their bases in the case that Trent Williams doesn’t return to the team.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport went on ‘Inside Training Camp Live’ this morning and pointed out the fact that this move by the Redskins is not just a placeholder while waiting for Williams. It is a move that could likely last into the regular season.

“It remains to be seen what is actually going to happen when the regular season actually begins, but it is very clear that things are not going well,” said Rapoport. “At this point, Trent Williams is not going to be a member of the Redskins or report to the Redskins any time in the foreseeable future.”

There have been no updates to the Williams holdout, which is an update in itself. The pro bowl left tackle is not with the team, and currently doesn’t seem to have any plans to join them soon. The Redskins made a smart move in bringing in another veteran to fill his place in the meantime. Unfortunately for Washington, it could end up being more than just a placeholder.
