Rapist who looked up woman's skirt at Leeds station while out on licence jailed

A rapist who looked up a woman's skirt at Leeds railway station just six weeks after he was released from prison has been jailed.

Carl Hannam was released on licence in August last year after sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl over her clothes.

On October 9, he was caught on his hands and knees on an escalator in Leeds train station with his head under a woman in front of him's coat.

The victim, aged in her 20s, had felt something brush against her leg while standing on the escalator.

Once spotted, the 43-year-old, formerly of Halifax and most recently of Springwell View in Holbeck, Leeds, ran out of the station.

The assault happened during evening rush hour.

He was arrested after a media appeal lead to his identification.

GPS from the electronic tag and CCTV from the train station and near his home helped provide further information that led to his arrest.

Hannam, who was also jailed for nine years in 2004 for raping three women, pleaded guilty to sexual assault at Leeds Crown Court last Thursday (April 4).

He was given an extended prison sentence and told he must serve a custodial term of four-and-a-half years, two thirds of which must be spent in custody.

He must serve a further five-and-a-half-year period on licence.

Investigating officer DC Niall Chambers of British Transport Police said: "No person should be subjected to such an invasive offence. As soon as this incident was reported, we took action to identify witnesses and locate and arrest the offender.

"He is a dangerous individual and I am glad the seriousness of his offence is reflected in his sentence.

"We are working to make trains and stations as hostile as possible for sexual offenders and reduce such crimes. The railway network is heavily covered by CCTV which is invaluable in bringing those responsible to justice. If you have been a victim text us on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, in an emergency always call 999."

Upskirting - defined as taking a photo or video up somebody's clothing in order to see their genitals or underwear - was made a specific offence in English and Welsh law on Friday.
