Rapist caged for mugging OAP after following him home from lap-dancing club

A thug who stole an OAP’s Rolex watch after following him home from a lap-dancing club has been jailed for four years.

Donovan Reid, 28, carried out a brutal attack on Ian Haig outside his home in Edinburgh’s west end last July.

Reid punched the 76-year-old company director before the watch was “ripped from his wrist”.

Reid, a convicted rapist, was sentenced yesterday, having earlier been found guilty of assault and robbery.

Judge Andrew Cubie described the crime as “cynical and mercenary”.

He told Reid: “The single blow was brutal and cowardly coming, as it did, out of the darkness. The victim had no opportunity to foresee or react to the blow.”

Reid will also be supervised for a further two years on his release.

Jurors heard how Ian had visited various nightspots in the capital, including Baby Dolls lap-dancing club.

CCTV images showed Reid and another man following him.

Ian left in a taxi and Reid and his accomplice got in a car.

When Ian arrived home and walked towards his front door, Reid pounced. In addition to the watch, £600 was taken.

Reid was jailed for nine years for rape in 2009 in England.

He also has a previous conviction for attempted robbery with an imitation firearm.
