'Rapidly developing Atlantic storm' to bring huge change to Irish weather as Met Eireann issue multiple warnings

A "rapidly developing Atlantic storm" will bring wet and windy weather to Ireland on Thursday evening with multiple warnings issued.

Met Eireann have already issued status yellow wind warnings for Galway, Mayo and Donegal as the Atlantic front brings rain, wind, thunder and lightning.

The center of this weather front will stay out in the Atlantic meaning it won't trigger an official storm in Ireland but will instead bring "unseasonable" conditions.

Weather warnings

Galway and Mayo both have status yellow wind warnings from 9pm on Thursday until 6pm on Friday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Through Thursday night and Friday, south to southeast winds, veering southwesterly will reach mean speeds of 45 to 65 km/hr with gusts of 85 to 110 Km/hr, mainly in coastal areas and on exposed hills and mountains."

Donegal and Sligo have been issued with a warning that will begin at 6am on Friday and last until 9pm Friday night.

The forecaster added: "Through Friday, southerly winds veering southwesterly will reach mean speeds of 45 to 65 km/hr with gusts of 85 to 110 km/hr, especially in coastal areas and on exposed hills and mountains."

Clare and Kerry also have a weather warning from 7pm Thursday until 5pm Friday.

The forecaster added: "Southeast winds, veering southwesterly will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, mainly in coastal areas and on exposed hills and mountains.

National forecast

Met Eireann are forecasting the great weather of this morning to be spoiled by wind and rain later today.

Some areas of the country will be hit with thunder and lightning with "unseasonable" conditions on Friday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Sunny spells for most of the country at first today. Cloud thickening from the southwest this afternoon as southeasterly winds freshen.

"Heavy rain, with thundery bursts, will arrive in the southwest by evening, extending northeastwards in strengthening southeast winds. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees.

"Wet and windy tonight with outbreaks of rain spreading northeastwards across the country, heavy and thundery at times, and followed later by showers. It will be a windy night with fresh to strong southerly winds and southwesterly gales on Atlantic coasts. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

"Unseasonably windy tomorrow, Friday, with gale force southwesterly winds along exposed western and northwestern coasts. A blustery day, with a mix of sunshine and showers.

"The showers will be most frequent over the western half of the country, some of them thundery and of hail. The southeast and east will become largely dry later. Temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than of late with highs of 12 to 16 degrees, coolest in the west."
