Rapid one-hour coronavirus tests available for Scots holidaymakers at Heathrow

Scots holidaymakers will be able to get a rapid one-hour test for coronavirus before flying out from Heathrow Airport.

Passengers heading to Italy and Hong Kong will be able to get their hands on the private test for £80 per person.

Both destinations require visitors from the UK to provide proof of a negative test before arrival into the country.

Flyers will have to pre-book a slot for testing online before they travel to the airport.

The rapid test will be trailed at terminals two and five of Heathrow - so there is a possibility it could be rolled out to Scots airports in the future.

Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye said: “Many other countries are already using testing to keep their borders safe while restarting trade and travel.

“These facilities will make it easier for passengers going to those countries to get a test and have the potential to provide a service for arriving passengers.

“Ultimately, we need a Common International Standard for pre-departure testing, and we welcome the UK Government’s recent announcement that it wants to take a global lead in establishing this.

“We will work with them to make this happen as soon as possible, so that we protect livelihoods as well as lives.”

Italy had recently introduced the new requirement for number of countries including the UK.

During the pandemic, countries have imposed new restrictions and entry requirements, and the Foreign Office travel advice has been subject to change, especially to destinations where there are fears of rising numbers of coronavirus cases.

Countries have been added or removed from the list of Scotland’s travel corridors, which determine if Scots will need to quarantine for 14 days when returning from a specific location.

Similar rules have been imposed elsewhere in the UK.

Italy, San Marino and Vatican City State were the most recent destinations to be removed from Scotland’s quarantine exemption list.

Anyone arriving back in Scotland from these places will have to self-isolate for 14 days under the rules.
