Raphinha explains his touching Ronaldinho tribute during Leeds United's victory over Southampton

Raphinha has revealed his celebration in Leeds United's win over Southampton was a tribute to Ronaldinho's mother, who died at the weekend from coronavirus.

The Brazilian scored a fine goal in the Whites' 3-0 win and took his shirt off to reveal a vest with Portuguese writing on it, which was subsequently revealed to be a message of support to the legendary Ronaldinho.

Raphinha's compatriot subsequently shared a picture of the celebration on his Instagram story, and, speaking post-match, the Whites star said he is close with Ronaldinho's family.

He told Globo Esporte in Brazil: “Today was a very special game for me.

Bielsa reflects on Leeds 3-0 Southampton

“I entered the field with immense sadness because of the passing of Dona Miguelina.

“Anyone who knows us knows our families have always been very close and I was very fond of her.

“In addition to being a very dear person, she was the mother of my greatest idol. I just hope she is at peace and resting. I dedicate this goal to the whole family. We will always be together.”

Raphinha has made an impressive start to life in the Premier League after moving to Elland Road from Rennes in the summer.

He says he is pleased to have made such a big impact in such a short space of time.

“The Premier League is an extremely competitive and tough league,” he said.

“The games are intense and finely balanced. I’m very happy with my quick adaptation. After all, it is my first season and I’m pleased I’ve been able to help the team on their return to the Premier League after so many years away.

“The most important thing is that we are having a good campaign.”
