Raphael Varane to return for Man Utd at Spurs after joining teammates on London flight

Raphael Varane is set to return to action for Manchester United after joining his team-mates on their flight to London.

The Red Devils face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday as they search for their first Premier League win in four matches.

Varane has missed United's last three games in all competitions through a muscle injury.

The 28-year-old picked up the groin issue while on international duty for France as they won the UEFA Nations League earlier this month.

Varane departed before half-time during the final, subsequently being absent until returning to full training this week.

And the former Real Madrid man's presence in Solskjaer's back is much-needed, with the Red Devils conceding 11 goals in the trio of fixtures he has missed.

Signed for an initial £36million in the summer transfer window, Varane has appeared seven times for his new club but has failed to help United keep a clean sheet in any of those matches.

However, the four-time Champions League winner has been steady in his personal performances next to the shakier Harry Maguire.

The Frenchman's return, along with that of compatriot Anthony Martial, should see Victor Lindelof drop out and means Solskjaer has a full squad to choose from for the encounter with Spurs, barring the suspended Paul Pogba.

"[It] is a very strange position to be in," Solskjaer revealed during Friday's pre-match press conference.

"To have 25 outfield players and five 'keepers training. 30 men training this week, all fit."

Also while speaking to the media, the under-fire manager challenged those who, unlike Varane, did feature in his side's 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday to respond.

"We need a reaction. It's my job as well to put the players in the right frame of mind," Solskjaer stated.

"I'm responsible for the reaction, for the result, for the performance.

"We've worked on the pitch on everything that needs to be sorted for a footballer and that's not just one thing, that’s not just frame of mind, that’s approach going into the game, strategy going into the game, game-plan, tactics, technically."

"We’ve had a good week and I feel that the boys are ready to give their best, as they always do.

"Of course, nothing went to plan [last week] and that was nowhere near our best."

He added: "Of course, you have to hold your hands up and that performance is not acceptable. And you’ve got to look at why it wasn’t acceptable and why it went as it did.

"I use the analogy that it felt like we were a boxer, being punch-drunk, getting knocked down in the first four minutes or in the first round."

Varane's fellow centre-back, Maguire, has also been speaking ahead of the match, admitting he and his team-mates let Solskjaer down last weekend.

"When you look back at the result and the performance it was embarrassing. Nowhere near good enough for this club," the England defender affirmed to Sky Sports.

"I hope every player in the dressing room is looking at themselves, taking full responsibility on their shoulders and not pointing the finger and blaming anyone else.

"You look at yourself first and foremost when you have a result like this and a period like this.

"We let the manager down against Liverpool. We let the fans down, the club down, us as players. So we have to take huge responsibility for that.

"Do we owe him a performance? Of course we do."
