Raphael Varane has refused to address speculation surrounding his future at Real Madrid, after reports linked the centre-back with a move to Liverpool this summer.
The France international arrived at the Bernabeu in 2011, having since won four Champions League titles while claiming three league victories and lifting the World Cup trophy in 2018 with his nation to boot.
The defender's contract runs out at the end of next season and according to Spanish media outlet Diario Madridista, Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing him but faces competition from the likes of PSG and Manchester United.
"I am not going to state the obvious," the 27-year-old said via the Daily Express . "I have already expressed myself a lot on the subject.
"I think it has already been said and the situation has not changed."
"Do I see myself at Madrid for many more years? We’re two days away from a game with France and I’m focused on that," Varane added, according to Marca, when asked for an update on his future.
"I don’t want to answer that question.”
Clearly, Varane is a world-class defender and would be an asset for any team.
However, given his age, the fee Madrid would demand and wages the player would require - it seems unlikely the Reds would make a move.
And given the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are set to return from injury before next season while Joel Matip will become available again, with Klopp also having the option to buy 20-year-old Ozan Kabak while developing Ben Davies in the heart of defence, it would seem a move for Varane is even more unlikely.
