Raphael Varane's leadership apparent in dressing room clip as Man Utd fans get excited

Raphael Varane is a landmark signing for Manchester United and footage from half-time of the World Cup final three years ago shows the leadership qualities he will bring to the club.

France were leading Croatia 2-1 at the halfway point of the showpiece match in Russia, but the game was in the balance - although Les Bleus ran out eventual 4-2 winners.

The dressing room of the winning team was shown at half-time, with players having their say after boss Didier Deschamps addressed his players.

Varane - who has joined United on a four-year contract after Real accepted a fee of £34million, which could rise to £42m with add-ons - was the most vocal player in the footage.

The central defender was repeatedly insisting to his teammates that they were going to win the match but advised them that they were overthinking things due to the occasion.

The footage begins with France boss Deschamps saying to his players: “When you get the ball, boom! Send it forward.”

That preceded Varane giving a motivational speech insisting to his teammates that they needed to be positive and show their confidence.

Then at Real Madrid, the central defender instructed: “Positivity. Confidence. We are there, we are getting hung up about positioning but…it is in our heads.

“If we are positive and believe, we can win guys!

“We will win this match! Stop overthinking it! There is no need to get so worked up about it.

“Come on, boys. There are 45 minutes left.

“We will win! There are 45 minutes remaining, go flat out and give it your all!”

The 28-year-old was unveiled in front of United fans ahead of their opening day 5-1 victory at home to Leeds United on Saturday.

His arrival has generated high levels of excitement and anticipation at the club, following his decade-long stay at Real Madrid - where he won four Champions League titles.

He is now set to partner United captain Harry Maguire at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s defence.

Upon his signing, Varane told the club website : “I think I’m very calm and, with my experience, I know when to shout when it’s necessary for the team.

“But, in general, I prefer to speak with my team-mates and speak about tactics, and to be comfortable with my team-mates before a game and make sure we are ready to fight and be in a positive mood.

“It’s difficult for me to do this interview in English, but I have to try.

“I think it’s very important to be close to the fans because we have the same objective.

“We have to fight together and it’s important for me to be comfortable with my team-mates and with the coach.

“It’s important for me, for my life and for my professional life as well.”
