Raphael Varane reveals brilliant nickname given to him by Manchester United teammate Paul Pogba

Raphael Varane has revealed that Paul Pogba has bestowed upon him the nickname 'Champions League Varane.'

Manchester United brought in experienced centre-back Varane in a bargain £34million move from Real Madrid in the summer, making it a great transfer window with additional signings of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

The Frenchman left Los Blancos having won all there was to possibly win in the Spanish capital, including the Champions League on a remarkable four occasions.

Varane's previous success hasn't gone unnoticed amongst his new teammates and he has revealed that his fellow countryman Pogba has given him a nickname to reflect his achievements in Europe.

"Yes, it's true [Champions League Varane]," Varane told BT Sport ahead of facing Villarreal in the competition on Wednesday.

"Sometimes some fans call me Varane Champions League, so it's funny.

"I like this competition, I know it's difficult to win the Champions League, but every time, it is a big, big challenge.

"You know you have to suffer, you know you have to play games [that are] very difficult, the pace is always very intense, so you have to be focused for 90 minutes.

"The most important thing is you have to believe, you have to believe when it's hard, you have to fight, you have to believe you can do it."
