Raphael Varane issues blunt response over fears of unrest in Man Utd dressing room

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane gave a blunt response when asked about rumours of unrest at the club.

Varane made his FA Cup debut in a back four for United alongside Victor Lindelof as the Red Devils registered a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday.

Scott McTominay’s first-half header proved to be the difference between the two side’s as United book their place in the fourth round.

United will now play host to Championship side Middlesbrough at Old Trafford in the next round in early February.

And despite rumours of unrest within the United dressing room, Varane put those to bed with a blunt response when speaking after the contest.

"We just have to be focused on our job,” he said. “We have to fight, we have to fight for our fans. That is it."

United were forced to work hard for their victory against a well-organised Villa side who looked threatening on the counter-attack.

The visitors went close on several occasions with Ollie Watkins striking the bar in the first-half, while Danny Ings had a goal ruled out by VAR in the second.

"It was a difficult match,” Varane added. “We had to suffer a lot on the pitch but together and I liked the spirit of this match.”

The Frenchman also felt the decision by Michael Oliver to rule Ings’ goal out was the correct one.

"It was a long moment! I think it is the right decision,” said Varane. “It is just a moment in the game and I think the spirit of the team was good."

Do you think Man Utd will win the FA Cup under Rangnick this season? Let us know in the comments section.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick abandoned his usually favoured 4-2-2-2 formation in favour of a 4-2-3-1 for the match, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford coming back into the side.

The shift paid off as United bounced back from a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Wolves at Old Trafford in the Premier League last time out.

"I think we showed a reaction after the Wolves game, that is what everyone expected from us,” Rangnick said. “We knew it would be very difficult against Villa. In the first half I thought we did well. It could have been 3-2 or 4-3 to us at half time."

One player who came under regular criticism during previous boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign was McTominay, who has seemingly enjoyed a new lease of life under Rangnick.

The Scotland international scored his second goal in three games after netting in the recent 3-1 league win over Burnley at the end of last month.

"He is an academy boy, his energy is amazing,” said Rangnick. “He now also starts scoring goals and also with some leadership skills. I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years he would be the captain of this team."

The Red Devils will now switch their focus back to the Premier League where they will meet Gerrard’s Villa once more on Saturday at Villa Park in the day’s late kick-off.
