World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf has questioned why Raphael Varane would want to sign for Manchester United.
The Red Devils are reportedly the front runners to sign the centre-half as he looks set to leave Real Madrid this summer.
United are looking for a proven winner to partner Harry Maguire at the back as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to go one better than last year in the Premier League after a runner-up finish.
Varane fits that bill after a trophy-laden decade in Spain's capital, but he is looking for a fresh challenge with the La Liga giants prepared to sell the defender for a suitable price as they look to rebuild under Carlo Ancelotti.

And Leboeuf, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, has given his verdict ahead of a possible move.
He feels that signing Varane would be a great decision for United, but isn't convinced it's the best one for the player if he wants to win silverware.
He told ESPN: "I like Varane, he showed during the World Cup of 2018 he was capable of leading the defence and doing a great job
"But I’m sorry, we’re talking about Ramos and without Ramos Real Madrid’s defence wasn’t the same last season and Varane was leading that defence, so I still have some question marks.
"That [Varane and Harry Maguire] could be a very good couple and they could work very well together because he’s an international player, he has experience.
"We saw him win lots of silverware and he can serve Manchester United. It’s a good signing for Manchester United. Is it for Varane a good signing if he wants to win something? I’m not sure."
