Raphael Varane hailed as "big-time player" by Anthony Martial after Man Utd transfer

Raphael Varane is a “big-time player” who can take Manchester United back to the top, according to compatriot and team-mate Anthony Martial.

Varane is in line for his United debut on Sunday at Southampton, after completing his £34million move from Real Madrid - which could yet rise to £42m.

United striker Martial has played alongside Varane for France and said his new club colleague's experience will be a huge asset to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's improving young side.

"Varane is a big-time player, who I know already,” said Martial.

"I don't think he will need too much time to adapt to his new environment, but I'm there for him for whatever little help or advice he may need.

"He has all his experience, - he's a player who has won a lot during the time of his career at Real Madrid and also in the French national team.

“So I'm sure he will bring all his powers, as he really is a top player and I know things are going to go well for him here at United.

“The skill-set he has, I know he will bring a lot to our team, in addition to his long experience, so we are all really delighted with these two new players we have.”

United skipper Harry Maguire is looking forward to building a successful central defensive partnership with Varane and said the arrival of the 28-year-old World Cup winner will serve to raise the bar within Solskjaer's squad.

“As players, the more the merrier and the bigger the competition the better,” said Maguire.

“We know when you play for Manchester United that you can’t sit still.

“If you sit still, then you’ll get caught out and people will overtake you, so you’ve got to keep improving and push yourself every day.

“So bringing players in will make you do that and, of course, making them feel welcome and settled is something we’ll all do.

“I’ll have a part to play in that and of course there will also be numerous players and staff who will do that too.

“I can only speak from my point of view when I joined this club and the way I got welcomed into the team, the players and staff were brilliant.”
