Raphael Varane discusses Paul Pogba leaving Manchester United to join Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has said Paul Pogba would be a 'fantastic' addition to any team but stopped short or urging his international teammate to quit Manchester United for the Bernabeu.

Madrid have endured a torrid pre-season, losing three and drawing one of their four games in the build-up to the new La Liga campaign.

Zinedine Zidane is keen for Pogba to arrive and bolster his options in midfield but the chances of the 26-year-old moving to Spain are getting slimmer by the day.

United value Pogba in excess of £150million and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is intent on building his team around the midfielder.

And Varane believes Madrid's team has enough quality to succeed without the addition of his fellow Frenchman.

"I think we have a team. Pogba is a good player, I know him very well. For any team he would be fantastic," Varane said.

"I trust my team-mates. If new players come, we’ll see. I trust my team-mates."

With Madrid already having spent just shy of £300m on recruiting Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo, they are unlikely to be able to finance a move for Pogba without trimming their squad.

Zidane was hopeful of offloading James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz but all three remain at Madrid.

James is a target for Napoli and Atletico Madrid, Monaco reportedly want Diaz and Bale's future is up in the air after his move to China fell through over the weekend.

Even if Madrid were to raise the funds for Pogba, it is highly doubtful United would have enough time to identify an adequate replacement before next Thursday's Premier League transfer deadline.
