Raphael Varane asked about future amid Manchester United transfer interest

Raphael Varane remained coy about his future at club level amid Manchester United's interest in signing the defender this summer.

Varane was earmarked as the ideal defensive signing by United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in 2018 and the Reds remain in the market for a centre-back this summer, despite the team's improved defensive record of late.

Real Madrid could look to sell Varane this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next year, when his contract at the Bernabeu expires.

However, Varane was in no mood to discuss his future in a press conference with France. He said: "I am not going to state the obvious, I have already expressed myself a lot on the subject. I think it has already been said and the situation has not changed.

"I am two days away from an international match with the national team, I am concentrating on that. I don’t want to answer that question on my future."

Speaking in September, Varane admitted it was difficult to plan for the future, but insisted that he will remain focussed on playing for Madrid for as long as he's at the club.

He said: "For the future, it's difficult to plan. Real Madrid is a very, very big club with great players. What's important is that everyone plays their part in the team.

"When we won our titles, our Champions League, it was as a team, with 11 leaders on the pitch each time."
