Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho can't hide transfer reality for Manchester United and Liverpool

Liverpool won't be overly concerned by the transfer activity of fierce rivals Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp 's only summer signing for the Reds is Ibrahima Konate, while the Manchester club has announced the capture of Jadon Sancho and are thought to be close to securing the signature of Raphael Varane.

But Liverpool were starting from a higher baseline - with key men returning from injury - and have already proven with a similar squad of players that they can win the Premier League title.

"I don’t think they’ll be too concerned with a statement signing or marquee signing," said Liverpool correspondent Paul Gorst on the latest Blood Red podcast.

"I don’t think Jurgen Klopp is too interested in what other teams do.

"Every time he’s asked about stuff like that he just says, 'We only play them twice a year, so that is when we concern ourselves with who they’ve got'."

The signing of Thiago Alcantara in the last year's summer transfer window was out of the ordinary for the way the Reds operate with transfers - he was seen as a player who was available on a once-only basis, having only had a year left on his Bayern Munich contract.

"I think the Thiago one was a little opportunistic and broke the model. He was 29 and he only had a year left on his contract," Gorst added.

"He was a two-time Champions League winner and had pedigree. Liverpool took advantage of that situation.

"Generally, I think players like Diogo Jota, are the kind of players Liverpool look at.

"They’re players who have who they can make the step up in the next stage of their career and Liverpool is the place they can do it at with plenty of years on your contract and at a good age."

Manchester United's signing of Sancho is a statement signing, but Reds boss Klopp will be too troubled by it as he knows the strength of his own squad when fully fit.

"I think Liverpool are targeting that player who is maybe the rung below in profile but is good enough to step up and those are generally the sort of players they’ll be looking at this summer," highlighted Gorst.

"I don’t they’ll be too worried about United signing Sancho and Varane or whoever.

"Obviously, they are statement signings that create a lot of attention, but I think Liverpool know that when everyone is fit and ready to go then they are good enough to win the Premier League."
