Rape suspect released after woman attacked

A rape suspect was released on bail after a woman was sexually assaulted on grassland.

At around 11.10pm on Sunday, police were called to reports of a woman being sexually assaulted on the grass area near the war memorial on Lord Street in Southport.

Police said the woman was uninjured, but was 'left shaken' following the ordeal and was taken to hospital to get checked over.

A cordon was set up covering a large section of gardened area between Lord Street and St George's Place.

Two police vans were also seen guarding the cordon on Monday, with two community officers.

On Sunday, a 24-year-old man from Birkdale was arrested on suspicion of rape.

In an update today, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the man arrested was bailed with conditions.
