Rape Crisis Scotland in fundraising appeal as thousands of victims left without help

Rape Crisis Scotland have launched a fundraising appeal after shock stats were revealed on the number of survivors being forced to wait for critical support.

Today the organisation - which works tirelessly to end sexual violence - published figures which show: "on a typical day in Scotland 1035 survivors were waiting to access 'lifesaving' Rape Crisis Support."

In response, a new campaign has been launched, £16 for 16 days. Today (Monday) marks the start of '16 Days of Action', an international movement to end gender-based violence.

It is hoped the appeal will raise £5,000; "vital funds for local Rape Crisis Centres and the helpline to help survivors access the support they need, when they need it."

As part of the appeal, Rape Crisis Scotland say: "On a typical day across Scotland this year over one thousand survivors of sexual violence are waiting for specialist support from Rape Crisis Centres.

"The wait can be excruciating; the support is described as lifesaving.

"'I was a mess felt like I couldn't start healing. No-one to talk to all going on in my head. I was self-harming, suicide attempts. I felt isolated and my head was exploding' - Survivor.

"The theme for 16 Days of Action – the international campaign to end gender-based violence – this year is Generation Equality Stands Against Rape. These 16 days are an opportunity for everybody, for individuals, organisations, businesses, politicians and all those people who condemn all forms of gender-based violence, to say clearly that enough is enough. We will not stand by and do nothing.

"This is a chance for all of us to turn words into action.

"That is why we are launching our biggest ever Crowdfunder – 16 pounds for 16 days – asking all those supporters to rise to the challenge and donate or raise £16 to help support the vital work of local rape crisis services across Scotland."

At the time of writing, over £1,000 worth of donations have been made.
