Ransacked safe found by Edinburgh dog walker sparks police hunt

A dog walker who found a ransacked safe dumped near a busy road was last night still waiting for the police to retrieve it – four days after alerting them.

Kevin O’Rourke was walking his pet when he noticed the discarded safe next to a footbridge near his Edinburgh home.

The 41-year-old said the safe appeared to have been broken into with a grinding tool and feared it had been stolen during a raid.

But despite informing Police Scotland about his discovery on Friday, Kevin said the potential evidence hasn’t been recovered.

An officer called him back on Saturday to say they couldn’t find it, despite local resident Kevin giving clear directions. Since then, the safe has been thrown down an embankment in the city’s Wester Hailes area.

Thieves have made off with several safes during break-ins in the last year.

Kevin was walking two-year-old Jack Russell Ziggy when he spotted the 18-inch safe at 9pm on Friday.

Police are yet to recover the safe more than four days since officers were first alerted to it (Daily Record)

He said: “It looked like a grinding disc had been used to cut open the lock. There’s marks on it from that.”

Police Scotland said: “We were made aware of this safe on Friday. Officers visited the area but were unfortunately unable to find it.

“Officers will be returning to the area to recover it.”
