Ranking the Golden State Warriors 2019-20 NBA season jerseys

With the NBA preseason tipping off in a little over two weeks, the Golden State Warriors are rolling out the uniforms players will be wearing the 2019-20 season, and it seems they’ve created one for every mood and occasion. Among them is a throwback to the San Francisco Warriors and the team’s 1962 Bay Area arrival, and an homage to “The Bay” — the natural landscape of the area before construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The team’s staples are in the collection, too: “Icon,” “Association” and “Statement.”

Here’s how Warriors Wire ranks the jerseys (from least favorite to favorite)!

Next: The Warriors Wire No. 6 pick

6. Icon Edition

The Warriors consider the “Icon” edition to be a blue alternative” to the team’s standard “Association” threads. The overall jersey color is blue, obviously, with the “Global Logo,” numbers and letters appearing in yellow.

Only the Nike and Rakuten logos on the front, plus stripes down the sides, appear in white.

The wide yellow neck and shoulder trim seem to overpower the other, more important elements in yellow: team logo, team name, jersey number. For this reason, we had to rank the Warriors “Icon” jersey as our least favorite (although we don’t exactly hate it).

5. The Town – City Edition

“The Town” pays homage to Oakland, Calif., the city the Warriors called home for 47 years before moving to San Francisco in the forthcoming 2019-20 season. The jersey is black with white logo and lettering. A giant oak tree is central to the logo with “The TOWN” emblazoned across the chest. Warriors blue accents the neckline and white stripes run down the sides.

The black background contrasts well with the logo, team name (“The Town”) and jersey number in white. The hint of blue around the neck is an eloquent touch to an overall sleek and sharp design. But the Warriors’ season-long farewell tour to Oakland in 2018-19 has left us with a bit of a “Town” hangover. Let’s hope the team uses this one sparingly.

4. San Francisco – Classic Edition

The “San Francisco” throwback jersey is an homage to the past in every way possible. Stark white, the jersey features stripes around the neckline — Warriors yellow and blue, alongside a hue of red more common to the 1960s, the decade in which the team moved from Philadelphia to the Bay Area. The tight font style of the jersey number is also a nod to to an earlier era.

Nike logo appears in blue and Rakuten logo appears in red.

The darker red of the Rakuten logo is what human eyes in 2019 have grown accustomed to, making for an interesting contrast with the “throwback” red of the trim. We like this one for the the novelty, especially the font style and three-stripe design. But the “throwback” red is a tad aggressive on the eyes. Good thing the designers kept that color to a minimum.

3. The Bay – Statement Edition

“The Bay” features a “landscape of seaside cliffs overlooking water accompanied by an overhead fog, a scene reminiscent of the Golden Gate prior to construction of the Golden Gate Bridge,” according to the Warriors. The jersey is yellow with blue trim around the neck and shoulders, with white stripes running down the sides.

In a time of increased awareness around catastrophic effects of climate change, if the “statement” the Warriors wish to make involves putting environmental issues front and center before their fans — literally on the chests of some of the most famous athletes in the world — mission accomplished. This bold statement, more than the design, makes “The Bay” one of our favorites.

Next: The Warriors Wire No. 2 pick

2. The Association Edition

The Warriors’ standard issue NBA uniform is white in color and features the team’s internationally recognized “Global Logo” in blue, according to the team. A wide blue trim accentuates the neck and shoulder lines. Yellow stripes run down the sides.

Nike logo appears in blue and Rakuten logo appears in red.

“The Association” sports a clean, crisp, highly-recognizable design, with impressive detail. The faint yellow trim inside the blue neckline is an exquisite touch. When the Warriors wear “The Association,” it is like they are wearing their Sunday best. The sheer classiness of “The Association” fills us with good vibes only.

Next: The Warriors Wire No. 1 pick

1. The City – Classic Edition

“The City” was designed by previous team owner Franklin Mieuli in 1966-67, according to the Warriors. It is yellow and features lettering, logo and numbers in blue, including Nike and Rakuten logos. “[A] pair of iconic San Francisco symbols” feature prominently on the jersey: Golden Gate Bridge on the front and cable car on the back.

The jersey number on the side of a cable car seals the deal for us. Having images on the front and the back, with the jersey number serving as a cable car number,  are highly creative and fun choices! For these reasons, the Warriors “The City – Classic Edition” is Warriors Wire’s No. 1 pick!

The Warriors tip off the 2019-2020 preseason on Saturday, Oct. 5, at their new Chase Center home. It is the first of four preseason matchups against the Los Angeles Lakers. Golden State’s fifth matchup is against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
