Ranking the Chicago Bears’ draft needs heading into NFL Combine

Draft needs are a tricky subject to tackle this early in the offseason. Roster weaknesses can quickly become strengths with a quality free-agent signing or two.

The Bears, this offseason, are no exception. Offensive tackle appeared like an area for GM Ryan Pace to attack in the 2019 NFL draft, but Bobby Massie’s contract extension, one that ultimately ensures he’ll be a starter through 2022, has changed that narrative.

The same might be said at safety, and defensive back in general, too. If Pace figures out a way to re-sign Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan, the need to find starting quality talent in the defensive backfield will drop significantly.

This isn’t to say the Bears shouldn’t be proactive at these positions. Drafting offensive linemen and defensive backs is always a sound strategy, but whether a position stays at the top of a needs-list is fluid.

The 2019 NFL combine on-field drills kick off Friday, March 1. Assuming the Bears aren’t able to lock up any more contracts before then, here’s how their draft needs rank.

Cornerback

Bryce Callahan is a free agent, leaving only Kevin Tolliver and Sherrick McManis as the team’s top reserves. Even if Callahan re-signs, expect cornerback to be a targeted position.

Safety

Deon Bush could probably serve as an admirable starter if the Bears lose Adrian Amos, but he can’t be the only option for Chicago entering 2019. There are a lot of good veteran options in free agency, but Pace has had success drafting mid-round safeties during his tenure as GM.

Running back

Not necessarily a need, but the Bears want a player who can fit coach Matt Nagy’s offense better than Jordan Howard. This year’s draft is loaded with talented Day-2 runners and if Chicago is serious about adding another option, they’ll do it in April.

Edge

Leonard Floyd had a breakout season as an all-around defender, but it doesn’t look like he’ll ever be the pass-rusher Pace thought he could be. And that’s OK. But the Bears need another pass-rusher in their arsenal to complement Khalil Mack and the rest of the powerful front seven.
