Jason Peters is set to be a free agent and even with his game slipping over the past two seasons, he’s likely to be one of most sought after offensive linemen on the open market.
At 38, Peters likely wants to sign with a playoff contender and his high level of play last season will warrant the attention of some talented organizations.
With Peters and Trent Williams sharing the same agent, both players will be intertwined in the process, with organizations around the league vying for their services.
Here are the five most likely landing spots for Peters on the open market.
***
1. Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles want to move on with Andre Dillard, but Peters is still talented and there could be some questions about the first-round picks readiness at left tackle going forward. Peters wants to play for a winner and he wants to play.
If his suitors on the open market arent’ to his liking, Peters could double back to the Eagles — who said that they would stay in touch — to possibly make one last run at another Lombardi Trophy while grooming Dillard for his future.
2. Cleveland Browns
Cleveland needs talent on the offensive line to help enhance the skill players that they have on the outside. Peters would provide them with stability at left tackle and new Browns general manager Andrew Berry has familiarity with Peters after spending time in the Eagles’ personnel department.
3. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have a talented roster but may need to upgrade the quarterback and left tackle positions. Anthony Castonzo could be headed for retirement and Peters has history and familiarity with Colts coach Frank Reich.
4. New England Patriots
The Patriots are always looking to bolster their offensive line and Peters is Bill Belichick’s type of player. The Patriots need a left tackle whether Tom Brady returns or not to possibly protect Andy Dalton or a litany of other likely replacements.
Isaiah Wynn is currently in the role but could lose his spot to Peters or Trent Williams.
If they targeted Peters over Trent Williams, New England wouldn’t have to sacrifice a draft pick.
5. LA Chargers
The Chargers aren’t necessarily in the playoff picture but have some pieces in place to be a very solid team in 2020. LA just made a trade, swapping players with the Carolina Panthers and bringing in Pro-Bowl guard Trai Turner.
That leaves a void at left tackle after Russell Okung was moved to Carolina and Peters could be the perfect replacement to protect Tyrod Taylor.
