Ranking Roger dead: The Beat star dies after brain tumour diagnosis at 56

Musician Roger Charlery, better known as Ranking Roger of the Beat and General Public, has died at the age of 56.

In January this year it was revealed that Charlery had suffered a stroke over the summer and was diagnosed with two brain tumours and lung cancer.

News of his death was announced to fans with a statement on Instagram which read: "He fought & fought & fought, Roger was a fighter."

It continued: "Sadly Roger past away a few hours ago peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

"Roger’s family would like to thank everyone for their constant support during this tough time. More to follow in the coming days. RIP ROGER! ❤️"

It comes just two months after Charlery released album Public Confidential and confirmed he'd finished a biography.

The book, co-written by Daniel Rachel, will be published this Spring.

The musician became a Punk rock fan as a teen and went on to play the drums in the Nam Nam boys before joining ska revival band The Beats in the late 70s.

Following news of his death, tributes began pouring in on Twitter .

Billy Brag was one of the first to respond, tweeting "Very sorry to hear that ranking Roger has passed away. Rest easy, Rude Boy."

While the official UB40 page shared: "R.I.P Ranking Roger, Big Love UB40."
