Ranji Trophy: Mohammad Azharuddeen’s 149 puts Kerala on top

AHMEDABAD: Kerala wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen (149* off 303b; 17x4) recorded a ton after seven years as the visitors dominated the second day of their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Gujarat.

The 30-year-old became the first batter from the state to score a ton in a Ranji semis as Kerala reached 418/7 at stumps here on Tuesday.

Kerala resumed Day 2 on 206/4 with captain Sachin Baby (69 off 195b; 8x4) and Azharuddeen at the crease. Gujarat left-arm pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla dismissed Baby off the second ball of the day, leaving Kerala in a spot of bother.

However, southpaw Salman Nizar 52 and Azharuddeen helped calm nerves, with a 149-run partnership — the highest in Kerala’s innings so far.

Brief Scores: Kerala 418 for 7 (Azharuddeen 149*, Baby 69, Nagwaswalla 3-64) vs Gujarat
