Rangers youth side seal clash against Champions League elite as remarkable progress continued

Rangers have progressed to the UEFA Youth League play-offs after seeing off Bulgarian side Septemvri Sofia.

A 3-0 win in blustery Dumbarton saw David McCallum and Brian Gilmour's kids safely through to the next round with Kyle Lowry's freak goal added to by Tony Weston and Cole McKinnon.

The renowned Balkan academy was no match over two legs, comfortably defeated 7-2 on aggregate by the Light Blues.

Lowry's 55th minute corner kick was helped all the way into the Septemvri net by the wind to open the scoring.

10 minutes later Robbie Ure squared from the back post and Weston tucked the chance away to ensure there was no chance of a dramatic comeback before McKinnon added some gloss to the final score five minutes from time.

The young Gers are now through to the play-off round and await to see who they’ll be drawn with after negotiating a pair of tricky round one and two ties.

Before facing Tuesday's opposition Rangers found their way past Swedish side Hammarby with a 5-1 aggregate win.

And now they look to next week and the play-off round draw - where they'll take on a team from the Champions League path.

Runners up from that stage such as Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge and Inter await on Tuesday and Rangers will be at home for the one-legged play-off in February.

Atleti put the Glasgow side out at the same stage of the competition in their last campaign two years ago.
