Rangers youngsters enjoying life on loan at Queen of the South

It can be difficult for young players, particularly loanees, to settle in to a new side.

However for the trio of Rhys Breen, James Maxwell and Dapo Mebude things are a little easier for them settling into life at Palmerston.

All three of the boys from Rangers have played together in the youth set up at Ibrox and now they find themselves plying their trade at Palmerston.

In Saturday’s win over Morton all three featured for the first time.

Rhys, 21, said: “It’s a good experience.

“It’s better when you know two people in the team but the second I came in the boys have been really welcoming and it’s good to get first team experience.

“I’ve had two good weeks in training and I knew I had to be patient but I got given my chance today and I’m delighted to get the win.”

Centre back Breen and left back Maxwell were side by side as 21-year-old Rhys saw his first action courtesy of an injury to Gregor Buchanan.

Maxwell said: “On the park it’s a lot easier for Rhys to come in. It’s not a big thing because we’ve already played together.

“It’s not anything new for him. And it’s been really easy for me to come in. It’s easier for me to help Rhys and Dapo come in so it’s all good.”

Dapo Mebude was thrown right in less than 48 hours after signing on loan until the end of the season.

He said: “I think the boys gave me a good reference and it wasn’t a hard decision to come.

“I think all of us know our end goal and you just need to settle in.

“Obviously having these guys here too helps but you just need to have tunnel vision and kick on.”

That “end goal” for the three lads is the same: break into the first team at Ibrox.

But with Steven Gerrard’s men seemingly on a rampage towards the title this season it’ll be harder than ever to secure a spot in the side.

James said: “That’s the ultimate goal but to just to have a career in the game then this is a good start to the CV, to get appearances under the belt. If it’s Rangers it’s Rangers but if not then we go somewhere else.”

Rhys added: “I think that’s all of our aims to come here, get more experience and prove that we can do that there.”

It’s the same situation for Mebude, who received a phone call from Gers joint B team coach Kevin Thomson the morning of the Morton game.

Mebude said: “I’ve been at Ibrox since I was 11-years-old and breaking into the first team has always been my goal so coming out to the Scottish Championship and trying to show the gaffer and the back room staff at Rangers what I can do can only help me kick on and help Queen of the South who have put their trust in me.

“Kevin was telling me to express myself. I think a lot of the coaches know what I can do, everyone at Rangers knows what I can do and I know what I can do.

“It’s just about coming here and showing to the gaffer and Sandy, who trust in me, everyone else what I can do.”
