Rangers vs Hibs penalty claim dismissed as former Premier League referee explains Willie Collum's decision

Former Premier League ref Dermot Gallagher insists Willie Collum made the correct decision to wave away a Hibs penalty appeal against Rangers.

Jack Ross' men had a big shout for a spot kick as Ianis Hagi challenged Joe Newell with a high boot.

But Collum waved away the Easter Road side's claims as Steven Gerrard's men would go on to seal the 1-0 victory at Ibrox.

And ex-EPL whistler Gallagher insists it was the right decision as Hagi did not make any contact with the Hibs midfielder.

Speaking on Sky Sports Ref Watch, he said: "The problem is for it to be a penalty, he has to make physical contact. if you look, I don't think (Hagi) does.

"I think his boot is high but he doesn't actually catch the player. It's very much like Ruben Dias and Danny Ings that we discussed last week.

"I don't think physical contact is made with the player so the referee cannot give a penalty."

The incident could have been classed as "dangerous", but that would only have resulted in an indirect free kick.

IFAB rules state: "An indirect free kick is awarded if a player plays in a dangerous manner.

"Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury."
