Rangers vs Celtic set to go ahead as Nicola Sturgeon announces mass gathering ban for next week

Rangers and Celtic's derby clash is poised to go ahead after Nicola Sturgeon confirmed mass gatherings are set to be banned from next week.

The Glasgow rivals will meet at Ibrox on Sunday just hours before a Scotland-wide shutdown aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus, reports the Daily Record.

The First Minister has confirmed the UK has moved from the 'containment' to 'delay' phase as the total number of cases in Scotland reached 60.

But despite other European leagues imposing postponements, over 50,000 will descend on Ibrox this Sunday.

Sturgeon said: "We will, from the start of next week, advise the cancellation of mass gatherings of over 500 people."

She stressed that the measures were "a Scottish government decision".

The decision will have implications for SPFL fixtures scheduled from next week onwards and precedes a planned UEFA meeting on Tuesday to decide whether the Champions League and Europa League will be suspended.

Rangers' last 16 first leg against Bayer Leverkusen will go ahead as planned at Ibrox later on Thursday.

The announcement follows a UK government Cobra meeting as the total number of UK cases rose to 590.
