Rangers v Young Boys odds and prediction as Steven Gerrard gets set to scratch a 12-year itch

The last Rangers boss to top a group in European competition was Paul Le Guen, way back in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup.

But Steven Gerrard - a manager with "class, charisma, and who is world renowned" according to former Motherwell defender Stephen Craigan - can claim that honour with victory tonight over Young Boys.

Group G is tighter than a submarine's hatch, with all four teams still able to qualify.

Rangers are guaranteed qualification if they take at least a point, but need victory to top the group.

Defeat might also be enough if Porto fail to beat Feyenoord at home in the other game.

Young Boys are definitely through with a win and can also make it with a draw if Porto are beaten.

Both games kick-off at 8pm.

At first glance Rangers' recent run looks rocky - just one win in four.

But they were the dominant side in Sunday's League Cup final, and claimed draws at tricky away trips to Feyenoord and Aberdeen, in addition to walloping Hearts 5-0 at Ibrox.

Rangers' home record in Europe has been imperious under Gerrard.

He remains unbeaten at home in 13 European matches, winning 10, including the last six in a row.

And while the visitors have French striker Guillaume Hoarau back from injury, they still have defenders Fabian Lustenberger and Mohamed Ali Camara, plus midfielders Vincent Sierro, Sandro Lauper, Miralem Sulejmani and Gianluca Gaudino, all expected to be out injured.

Rangers are a solid 17/20 to get that home win with thepools.com.

The draw is also worth considering at 11/4 .

But Rangers to win and Both Teams To Score is a pools.com special at 5/2 and we look the look of that best.
